Success Stories...

Ross Earnshaw - golf scholarship in America

Ross Earnshaw was one of the first Juniors to be taught by Andrew here at York Golf Range. He went on to win local competitions and play for the county.

“When my family moved here from Manchester we went to the designer outlet (at McArthur Glen) and I met Andrew Smith, the professional from York Driving Range". “He told me about the junior coaching there and I have been with him ever since.”

Ross is now playing golf professionally in America having gained a golf scholarship at Post University Connecticut.

Alex Bonfield - most improved Junior girl golfer in Yorkshire

Alex Bonfield started on Andrews YMG course as a 6 year old and he continues as her golf coach today. She has had a great year as a member of Fulford Golf Club - Alex won four of the Junior Majors, the Spring Cup, Hessay Cup, Ebor Trophy and John Norris Trophy, and came 2nd in the Captains’ Junior Day and 3rd in the Junior Putter. She also represented the club in friendly and league matches, won a number of junior Stableford competitions, and was also invited to play at Royal Birkdale Golf Club as part of a reciprocal friendly match.

At the beginning of the year her handicap was 34.1, by 30 September it had dropped to 13.3.

As a result of this handicap reduction, the Yorkshire Ladies County Golf Association awarded her the Jean Rudgard Memorial Award for 2017, for the most improved Junior girl golfer in Yorkshire.

UPDATE 16.09.22: Alex is now playing off a handicap of 1

Max Hollinghurst - multiple junior competition winner

Max first picked up a golf club in August 2016 aged 8 years, and over the next few monthsstarted playing at York Golf Range (where his parents had their first date years earlier!)

Max started playing on York Golf Ranges course in 2017 after he turned 9 years, and started going to both group and individual lessons with Andrew, greatly enjoying these. He is very competitive, and encouraged by Andrew, played in his first golf competition in 2018 soon after turning 10 years. He won that first competition and over the next few months won other events to finish top of the 10-14 years Order of Merit on the Bobcats Junior Tour.

In 2019, aged 11 years, Max played in a wide range of junior opens, and events on regional and national tours, with several high finishes. In the winter of 2019/20 Max won the Junior Winter League Order of Merit at Leeds Golf Centre, winning several of these events.

Max made full use of lockdown in March to May 2020 by practicing hard in his garden using a net and mat, and by having remote sessions with Andrew using FaceTime and shared video analysis. This hard work paid off once competitions started again in Summer 2020, with Max, now aged 12, winning in a short space of time the Moor Allerton Junior Open, finishing 2nd in Junior Opens at Leeds Golf Centre and Ilkley, and a 5th place finish in the Yorkshire Under 14 County Championship. In the process Max's handicap reduced rapidly from 20 to 11.

Max has been selected for the Yorkshire squad training starting in Autumn 2020 and qualified for the Junior European Open and World Stars of Junior Golf.

In 2021 Max had high finishes in a number of junior events, also playing in Yorkshire and North of England Championships. He made his debut for the York Union Junior Team, and was selected for the Yorkshire Under 16 No2 Squad sessions from Autumn 2021. During 2021, at 13 years of age, Max reduced his handicap to 5.5.
